A Good Example of Bad Leadership

                Rarely do we get to see a public exhibition of bad leadership such as we recently witnessed in the U.S. Congress.  Americans know well we need a new perspective that will lead to significant legislation to improve our economy, educational system, immigration, and multiple other areas.  I have no doubt that a few dozen ordinary Americans from varying backgrounds balanced with experts in the major fields of inquiry would do a far superior job  to quickly set our society on a positive path to remedy our problems.  

                There is a basic disconnect in the communication between government and its people.  The government is operating in a vacuum.  Instead of seeking the truth and working together to create incredible solutions, our leaders have taken the low road to find expedient ones. 

                The government has taken an authoritarian point of view.  Instead of recognizing that everyone at the table has their unique set of knowledge, skills, and talent to contribute to the solution, our leaders support their own ideological interests.  Somehow they feel superior to their constituents.  They know better and will decide for us.  Nothing could be further from the truth. 

                Instead of listening carefully and first seeking to understand they are intransigent and fail to get the intellectual and emotional buy-in necessary to good communication.  They have substituted the attitude of service and helping others with one of self-interest and perpetuating ideology and personal agendas.   They have a condescending attitude similar to bosses who don’t respect their employees.    

They engage in win-lose scenarios and lose control of their emotions.  They have the “me” mentality and focus on their reelection, answering to financial supporters and special interests, and perpetuating their own personal success. 

                We see these actions often in organizations that rule by authoritarianism, anger, and micromanagement.  We see this in family relationships and the breakdown of rapport between significant others as well as parents and teens.  These relationships tend to be shortsighted, authoritarian, and angry ones highlighted by bad communication and the fight for survival.  It’s the classic win-lose scenario.  It often ends up in bankruptcy, divorce, and damaged families. 

                 Americans, including myself, have been too complacent.   We are currently repeating mistakes that have led to the downfall of great empires.  It’s time for John and Jane Doe to find small ways to get involved, and demand leaders who will act in a more enlightened way.  It’s time for our educational systems to teach leadership and personal development to adults and youth throughout our system. 

                 Great leaders take responsibility.  They have an attitude of service and act from compassion as well as logic.  They know how to reconcile differences, accept different perspectives, and operate from an attitude of calm and confidence.  They know how to lead with intelligence and common sense, have a positive and optimistic attitude, and apply the wisdom of the ages in daily affairs. 

                 What to do next?  Make a decision about one action you will take now to influence the world in a positive manner.  On a daily basis please aim to show leadership in our society, your career, and at home.   Leadership is personal as well as organizational.
