High Unemployment High Vacancies Are You In-demand? 

         The job market is undergoing a revolution.  Unemployment is high and contrary to what the government portrays the situation is not improving.  There is a growing group of executives and managers who are chronically churning from job-to-job often as contractors or part-time employees.  It is a painful way to live economically and emotionally. 
Nevertheless, there are a lot of vacancies that exist across a variety of job sectors.  One problem is that companies are not finding people who meet their performance criteria and who lack specific hard and soft skills.   Baby boomers are retiring in record numbers and that means jobs are opening.  Too many young people have an education and level of engagement that don’t meet company needs, and that means companies will look elsewhere to fill their needs. 


                Meanwhile, people who are highly talented and also have the acumen to demonstrate it are in high demand whether they are employed or not.  The demand may come from inside the company you work at or from a competitor.  In both cases it is your task to demonstrate your talents to the world. 


                As we know relationships are a key to success in the age of connectivity.  It is essential to develop trust, loyalty, and respect with the people you work with.  This demands that you be increasingly transparent and visible on the job and while networking.  It demands that you be active in your own career development.  You do this by unlocking your creativity and innovation and acting on it.  You supplement your knowledge and tangible skills by exhibiting understanding, enthusiasm, and intellectual curiosity.  If you don’t know how then you take the time to learn. 


                Many people I meet really are experts in their field.  They’ve been working for 10-20 years and have a world of experience.  However, the world of work is changing at the speed of light and most people are not adapting.  It makes me believe that around 85% of people engaged in business and professional careers will be struggling for survival for the foreseeable future.  That is not a good story. 


                Here is the good story.  People who decide to be in the top 15% will flourish; find great jobs that are well-rewarded at amazing companies.  They will reap the fruits because companies have more problems that are increasingly complex to solve. 


                What to do now?  It’s time to do a self-assessment.  Answer questions such as, who am I in my career?  Where am I right now?  Where do I want to be?  How will I get there?  Seek out resources to assist in the process.  Take the initiative now.
