Be a Job Search Video Star!

One of the top priorities in the job search is to build an accurate portrait of who you are, what you do, and the value you bring as a potential contributor to the company.

How cool would it be to do a video to enhance your job portfolio? If you are thinking about a way to distinguish yourself from the crowd it is an excellent idea. Doing a video is a great way to enhance your marketing presence and allows recruiters to get to know you more intimately. It can be a wonderful adjunct to your cover letter and resume. It may help you to create a positive impression and conveys a lot of information that a motionless resume cannot.

A video can be placed in your Box Files on LinkedIn, on your personal web site, on You Tube, or on your Visual CV. It can be sent to a recruiter or target company.

Think about what you want to say and how you will say it. Use the video as a tool to express who you are and what you are all about. A video potentially saves time in the recruiting process and helps establish rapport with the recruiter. Often landing an interview and ultimately a job is more about the “know, like, and trust factor” than the candidates expertise.

Of course you’ll want to speak in an articulate manner, dress appropriately, and allow your body language to send a positive message about you. Video shows you as comfortable in your own skin, bold and assertive, and at ease with the latest technology.

I suspect for many of you a video presentation is stretching beyond the comfort zone, and yet, judging by the number of videos on You Tube it’s not very hard to do. Here is a chance to play the job search game at a higher level!

The video should be 2-3 minutes long. Remember the KISS rule and follow it. You are not making a video for Paramount Pictures, unless you really are. Ha! A short video gives the viewer time to get a feel for you, expresses your personality, and demonstrates your communication skills.

Practice what you want to say so that you speak fluently and act naturally. Make eye contact, convey a positive service-oriented attitude, and a professional and yet friendly body language.

If you are sending it to a target company you might talk about what you like about the company and why you would like to work there. Wear clothes that align you with the company culture.

If you are using it generically talk about your expertise, your unique value as a problem solver, what your valuable contribution to a company might be, and what your unique strengths are. Talk about creativity and innovation. Wear clothing that represents who you are as a professional business person.

Make sure that you are well groomed and attired. Be certain the background is neat and professional looking, and be sure the picture is bright enough to look good. This doesn’t have to be cinematic quality and yet the rule to follow is, “Credibility is job #1.” The point is for people to get to know you, like you, build rapport, and be credible.

I suggest you finish with a call to action. Invite the viewer to make contact and be sure to put your contact information on the video.

What to do next? Make a video just for fun. Eliminate the pressure to perform by doing it for you instead of with the intention of showing it to the world. Play around and discover how you feel about it. Enlist a friend (11-year olds work cheap) who knows how to make a video. Create an account on You Tube. Once you have the feel for it the fear will diminish and you can move forward creating your video. Good luck and have a blast!
