Personal Branding and the Pain of Childbirth

In the summer of 2012 I begin to develop my personal brand in a manner that would establish credibility with my target audience.  In all deference to mothers the journey has been a long, slow, emotionally painful process that has culminated in the wonderful and satisfying birth of a personal brand.  I created the name Career Coach NJ to replace the less descriptive Cooper Leadership Coaching.  I invented the tagline “Thriving in a Complex World”, and the brand continues to evolve as I discover my true purpose in coaching and how to implement it effectively.

At the beginning, I experienced the process personally as opposed to hiring professionals because as a baby boomer I needed the hands-on experience of becoming a child of the 21st century.

I studied what a personal brand is and why it is so important to a small business.  I determined the best personal branding tools and through trial and error determined which ones aligned with my personal sweet spots.  Translation: What activities will I enjoy enough to actually get them done consistently?  I managed the time by designing a step-by-step process based on my career vision and objectives.  I journeyed through an amazing process that included clearly defining my target audience, creating a menu of personal brand tools, understanding what I wanted to share, who I wanted to share it with, and daily implementation.

There were moments when I was developing the website that it was so painful I actually succumbed and sought after help.  I couldn’t bare the frustration and disappoint.  At that point I was able to easily explain what I wanted.  I just couldn’t actually do it.  What took me hours, days, and even weeks was implemented by an IT pro in a matter of minutes.  It felt so good having someone perform the operations for me and simultaneously teaching me what to do.  I was a truly happy camper.  Next I hired a business coach to teach me marketing strategy and tactics because it was too hard to figure out myself.

I now know the process well enough to teach it.  I am knowledgeable enough to teach it to my clients as a group and individually and the process of study, practice, and teaching helped me learn it truly and deeply.

The following are some important lessons learned during the birthing process.

1.       Business is changing at light speed and in order to thrive in a complex world you must learn how to reinvent yourself, adapt to change, and create your own destiny.

2.       We are all an original with a unique set of knowledge, skills, and passions, as well as a person with a powerful sense of purpose and meaning.

3.       Self-study as well as client and market research are keys to an effective personal brand.

4.       Your PB assists your ideal client or a recruiter to discover how professionally you present yourself; how well they might align with you; to learn about your qualifications; to appreciate your personality; to ascertain your communication skills; and perhaps to know you are a child of the 21st century who engages in current technology.  For the right client and/or company you send a message that will attract the right ones.

5.       You are branding around your intelligence.  It is in the process of demonstrating to the world your knowledge and how you use it that you distinguish where your exceptionality exists.  You want to show how you use your intelligence in real world situations to solve problems, create innovative strategies, and implement tactics to get fine results.

6.       “Credibility is job #1.”  The personal brand shows the value you bring to a client or a position rather than merely the function you perform.

Along the road I discovered a new company name, Career Coach NJ, and a tag line called “Thriving in a Complex World.”  My credibility has grown sufficiently to attract terrific clients and determine my destiny in business.  One year later I am now on the radar of my audience and they reach out for my coaching expertise and public speaking skills.  Good stuff!
