Prioritize Your Time and Get Great Results

What kind of challenges are you having putting together all the monthly, weekly, and daily activities required to accelerate your job search. There are so many activities to perform so how do you structure and manage your time to do the priority activities as a part of your routine.

First of all, when you are adding activities to your already busy schedule it is essential to eliminate other ones that take up roughly the same amount of time. I recently took on a marketing project which I put together with the help of my business coach. It is top priority for my business growth and is taking me approximately 10 hours each week. I already had a busy schedule and so I had to eliminate items such as; Networking that didn’t focus on my target audience; Less than essential television; Distraction surfing the web; and Too much time with the email.

I was distracted by activities that weren’t helping me grow my business or fulfill other top priority goals in my life. I was busy and these distracting activities pulled me away from my main concerns.

Take a look at your calendar, to do list, and also include thinking about how you fill your time with stuff that is not on the schedule. Ask yourself, “Which activities on and off my schedule are a waste of time?” Focus on finding the number of hours you want to spend working on building your business or finding the ‘Right Career, Right Now. TM’

It is also advisable to estimate the time you will need for essential tasks and add 10-20% to the estimate. Aim to do one job at a time so you don’t dilute your effort. I would rather you get a smaller number of action steps done really well than a longer list done in a mediocre way.

All your vital marketing as well as other career and business building activities go on the list. You must write them down or else they tend to be forgotten and fade away. All of a sudden you look at the clock and the day is gone. Whatever amount of time you have allocated to marketing yourself and your business must be strictly adhered to. It is a key element to your success.

You choose the most important elements based on the strategies you have selected which are hopefully ones you really enjoy doing. An assortment of actions might be:

• Networking

• Targeting companies

• Volunteer activity

• Online groups

• Warm contacts

When you add 5 hours each week it generates into 20- 30 hours each month. Go ahead and spend the time regularly and you will accelerate your job search and business building.

Finally take time for you. When you are unemployed it’s the ideal time to participate in hobbies, take a seminar, or catch up with your self-growth. The same goes for business owners. Make sure you take time to rejuvenate and take time to look at the big picture so you’re working to strategically improve the business and not just devoting time to everyday actions.

Your assignment is to check your ‘to do’ list, weekly calendar, and all the time not officially counted and pick out what’s wasting time and consider eliminating or at least reducing it. Actually make a list of how you spend your time each day. I suggest you’ll find quite a few hours to reengineer your schedule more productively.
