How to Recover From the Networking Blues?

Networking is an essential ingredient to a successful job search and keeping a business consistently filled with new prospects and clients. Informal contacts and introductions account for the majority of successful job searches. Referrals from existing company personnel account for many job openings getting filled.

One major goal is to enter the hidden, unpublicized job market, using all the rewards that networking contacts potentially offer you.

Informal contacts are primarily accomplished through friends, relatives, and direct contacts. Although it does not ordinarily yield instant results, networking requires a diligent, steady and well-orchestrated effort conducted for a period of time. It’s important to remember that it takes only one good introduction to get a job or to receive an introduction to a great new customer that will yield significant revenue. The way to get outstanding results is to take action, to be committed to doing it consistently, and to have a positive attitude about networking so you learn to enjoy it.

Networking is not simply meeting as many people as you can, collecting their business cards, and agreeing to have coffee at a later date but is about building relationships. As in all worthwhile endeavors, using your common sense and developing an effective strategy are the keys to achieving success. Step number one is to figure out your networking objectives. Begin by deciding who do I want and need to know? Ask yourself the question, “Who is my ideal job referrer?” We all do random networking and yet there must be a method to the networking. You want to select networking opportunities that will help you get introduced to your specific target audience.

You will search for people that are affiliated in your preferred industry; people who are working at a specific company that interests you; and people who can introduce you into a target company. I find it is very helpful to know people who are “movers and shakers.” This means people that enjoy being helpful, know a lot of people in your industry, who can introduce you to your target audience, and who are known to be high-profile outstanding relationship builders. Find people who will recognize the value of your knowledge, skills, and talents. Network with people who are easily accessible and foster relationships with the audience you want to communicate with. Build the relationship deeply enough so your contact will be willing to tell others about you and be willing to refer you to appropriate contacts and companies.

It will be beneficial to create good strategic alliances with people who share the same target audience but do not provide the same service or look for the same job. You want to build as many different meaningful relationships and alliances as possible.

You are looking to find someone in your peer group who has their own connections or a friend with connections into a suitable company. You should engage people with an attitude of contribution, making a difference, bridge-building, and curiosity. Both parties have needs and desires and people want to know that investing their time with you will lead to results. Active networking is an essential part of the job search, the business building game, and creating a meaningful life. To succeed at networking engaging it with passion and a plan is critical. The people you connect with have potential leads and you can both facilitate each other to reach out and refer jobs and clients.


Here is your assignment: Develop a networking plan based on your specific interests. Make networking connections based on your specific profession and list of target companies. Consciously endeavor to make friends with important people such as the president at the local chamber of commerce; visit industry trade shows; identify what club’s, organizations, and associations would be worthwhile to visit? Everyone is a potential lead. Put on your sales cap and get out there with a plan.
