Social Media and Building Your Movement

Social media is an integral part of business whether you are building a business or enhancing a career. Social media is multi-faceted.  You show leadership by building strategic alliances with essential partners. In a larger context by building your “tribe” or larger aligned community you show them who you are in your career.  Ultimately, your active participation in social media shows engagement in the knowledge and digital revolution.  You also express the fundamental best leadership practice that states, “We do not succeed in life and career alone.  Build a support system and give and get help.”

What I am suggesting goes beyond networking into building strategic alliances.  First of all you will do good for your own career by actively engaging people with interests that align with your own.  You concurrently create a forum for people to easily and actively share their ideas.

The first step is to know your unique career mission and gift, and via social media to express your personal brand message and allow other people know what it is.  Social media is a potentially effective vehicle to contribute your unique knowledge, skills, and talents to a larger targeted audience.  The aim is to create loyalty and trust via an active conversation within the community you are developing.

It’s possible to view social media as a monolithic impersonal activity that saps the intimacy out of relationships.  When taken as a vehicle to simply add as many contacts as possible like collecting business cards that collect dust in a drawer that assessment is true.  However, the point is to make relationships meaningful and personal by sharing with and serving your chosen community.

It’s important to share what you know and to be known as an expert.  This happens by publishing articles you've written, sharing comments on others’ articles, sharing information you find interesting and giving your perspective on them.  These are all simple and effective ways to share and care.  It’s key to be vulnerable in your virtual relationships because while sharing expertise is paramount, sharing the real you is equally important to build rapport.

Social media is a profound and powerful medium and the only way to know and enjoy it is to actively engage.

Here are a few examples showing what to do to expand your experience and build a social media community.  These activities will help you build your business and a career.

 What to do now?

  •  Join LinkedIn groups that truly ally with your interests and post comments and articles.
  • Start your own blog and share your knowledge and friendship.  This will gain you followers and ultimately help you find people to pay you for what you do.  To build a career or search for a new job this will help you gain attention and earn respect.
  • It is helpful to build a larger community of connections.  Simultaneously, foster relationships with a smaller group of strategic alliances.  These are people you make personal contact with and encourage a more intimate relationship by working with in a volunteer situation, having lunch with, calling on the telephone, or collaborating with on a joint venture business project.
  • It is always important to be a bridge builder and find ways to connect people with similar needs and interests together.  Above all build a strong rapport with your community so that they seek you out for your knowledge, skills, talent, and friendship.
  • Return home

Everyone is a leader—either by choice or by default.
Whenever you interact with anyone else (and yourself) you are leading.
So the question is not “Will you lead?” but rather “How well will you lead?”
